The Department Today:

The department provides future officers with broad-based, foreign area-related skills to master strategies for global engagement, partnership, and mutual security responsibilities. This entails courses in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish—eight of the most important languages in the world. Within each language there is a broad spectrum of courses, from primarily skills development to a broader appreciation of a particular culture, history, and literature. These skills are further developed through the department’s international programs and through academic programs in Foreign Area Studies.

Curriculum:

The department offers a wide spectrum of courses in eight languages and supports the several courses in Foreign Area Studies.
    Core Courses:
Foreign Lang 131 & 132. Basic sequence in one of eight languages
    Majors:  Foreign Area Studies (Interdisciplinary)
         Humanities (Interdisciplinary)
Minors:  Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish

Noteworthy:

The department’s Foreign Language Learning Center utilizes the latest language learning technology, which allows multiple languages to be taught simultaneously while providing the capability for individual learning and group or teacher-led activities using any type of multimedia. The department manages the Academy’s Office of International Programs, which includes:
Cadet Summer Language Immersion Program (at a foreign university or language school)
Cadet Semester Exchange Abroad Program (at a foreign military academy)
Cadet Semester Study Abroad Program (at civilian universities)
Foreign Academy Visit Program (during International Week)
Cultural Immersion Program (spring break or summer)
Four-Year International Cadet Program (foreign cadets at the Academy)
Military Personnel Exchange Program (foreign officers on Academy faculty or staff)
